Manager Overview:
Victor Smorgon Partners is an Australian investment manager based in South Yarra, Victoria, and is an authorised representative of Como Services. The firm manages the Victor Smorgon Partners Resources Gold Fund and draws on the Victor Smorgon Group's history of investing in resources and gold-related assets. Peter Edwards and David Leeton are co-founders of Victor Smorgon Partners. The investment team includes portfolio manager Cameron Judd, who has more than 20 years' experience in the resources sector across engineering, mining analysis, mining private equity and investment management. The manager describes its investment style as fundamental and research-based, focusing on domestic and global companies with management quality, value and above-average growth potential, alongside an assessment of overall market conditions. Its stated gold-sector experience includes ownership and operation of Stawell Gold Mines, holding gold bullion at the Perth Mint and investing in junior listed explorers and other gold-related investments. |
Fund/Strategy Overview:
Victor Smorgon Partners Resources Gold Fund seeks exposure to gold and other precious metals through a concentrated long/short portfolio of Australian and globally listed gold and precious-metal companies, together with physical precious metals, precious-metal ETFs, royalties, streaming assets and other direct or indirect gold-related investments. Since 1 January 2024, the Fund has intended to invest across the mine-life cycle, primarily in companies operating in Tier 1 jurisdictions, with a maximum single-stock position of 20% of the portfolio at cost. It intends to maintain at least 50% of FUM in physical gold and Australian or globally listed gold equities, while physical gold and other precious metals may represent up to 10% of FUM. Gold derivatives may be used to manage portfolio risk, and short selling may be used for hedging or where the manager expects a security to decline. The process is discretionary and fundamental, assessing company management, value, above-average growth potential and overall market conditions. Foreign-currency exposure may be actively hedged to reduce currency fluctuations rather than for speculative purposes. |
